X-ISP Home

Quoting from the home page.....

X-ISP is a visual, X11/XForms based, user-friendly interface to pppd/chat, i.e. an X11 dialup networking tool. It is also a small ISP and phone company (PTT) database manager, and a dialup costs and usage logging/statistics tool. It provides maximum feedback from dialing and login phases on a message browser, versatility in interrupting a call in progress, a manual login terminal window, as well as call-back and per-ISP DNS selection capabilities.

I have found X-ISP to be the easiest and most reliable dialing/ ISP connection program for Linux. This X windows program provides an easily configured program completely eliminating the need for editing/ debugging chat scripts.

Most importantly X-ISP is the only program for Linux that provides a convenient "open terminal after connection" capability. In my case, this terminal window is mandatory when connecting to my employer to allow entry of security token information.

The X-ISP home page provides excellent support for the program so I will offer only a couple of comments/ lessons learned.

  1. The program is xforms based so xforms (available as RPM) must be installed before X-ISP.
  2. X-ISP runs well under KDE.
  3. Default permissions for xisp, xispdial and xispterm are root use only. In a trusted multi-user environment change permissions of these programs for ISP connections by other users.
